Save Money Home improvements

MY plan is to tell everyone interested how to save money on home repairs or improvements. I can and will do that. From my perspective, it seems simple, but I have made living remodeling houses for the last thirty years. What you need is an understanding of exactly what you are having done someone to explain the whole process simply in a way that you can understand. I am sure that most of you have jobs that are a lot more complicated than this is.
Ideally, you could tell me what you want done and I could walk you through it explaining each phase of the project, which trades will be involved and to what extent. Then  show you how to figure approximate material and labor cost. You just need to know enough to avoid being taken advantage of and from my experience the more you sound like you know especially concerning material and labor cost the less likely the sales person is to take advantage. They will take advantage I could tell you stories maybe I will if anyone reads these articles. I would like this to serve as an introduction and because of space limitation, I will pick a simple project and walk you through it and in my next article, I will pick something more complex and deal with it entirely.
For now, I will show you how to save about half on having vinyl siding installed on your home and at the same time things to look for to insure a top quality installation.
For starters, when installing vinyl siding (as in many projects) the most important part is the prep. Do not let the applicators cover rotten wood. Do not let then leave open holes where trim is removed prior to the installation. One option is to fill these spaces with expanding foam such as “great stuff”. Make sure the insulation is installed under the siding and that it is tight around all openings: doors, windows, electric outlets, lights and vents. Have them tape the seams in the insulation with a good quality duct tape. Insulation is often done half-assed since the siding quickly covers it. This is important for you to get the rated r-value on the insulation. This is not how you save money.
The vinyl siding business is well known for its high-pressure salesmen. This is because selling siding is very profitable. They are commission often equals half of your total price. So my advice is not to contract the job through any large company so you do not have to deal with some slick salesman. Find a supply company in your town not a depot or low go where the pros buy there material somewhere like ABC or an Alcoa dealership and ask there salesman to recommend a reputable siding applicator while your talking to them get a price on the material. These jobs are bid by the square (100 sq. ft.) high enough to cover all the extras. Knowing the cost of the siding can only help.
That is my best advice on vinyl siding, cut out the salesman. The warranty is provided by the manufacture filled out by the applicator. Get the applicator to give you a 2 yr. guarantee on labor any problems with the installation will appear much sooner than that. I hope this is helpful.
